Lespecial

lespecial is a trio whose music defies any straightforward genre classification, except to say that they combine artsy post-rock with prog rock, jazz, electronica, and some breakbeat action. Their music is often instrumental and suggests a broad range of influences without singling any of them over the other: there is some King Crimson that surfaces (the '80s version), some Primus, some Flying Lotus, some System of a Down, and so on. They are not heavy-handed in the way they use these elements. Instead, they mold them into something groovy, sophisticated, and powerful, displaying their tightness as an ensemble in the process. There is a bit of jam band vibe to the way they play, even though they most certainly are not that. In addition to the usual power trio combination plus synths, the band also uses sampling quite a bit to create some of their more atmospheric pieces.
