Kojo Melché Roney
Outline
Kojo Melché Roney started out as a jazz prodigy who was touring as a musician at the age of 8, followed by years of working as a sideman. Now he's a virtuoso drummer who plays in a particularly sharp-edged fusion jazz style, appearing in a power trio on his debut album, 20224's Psychedelic, where he was also the composer and the producer. He has a powerful presence that navigates through crunchy psychedelic rock, vintage hard fusion, and occasional experimentation. His music is dynamic, as his playing style, where he weaves strands of hard-nosed rock drumming with a fluid jazzy feel, and even atmospheric and ambient-adjacent textures that he creates.
Roney comes from a long line of jazz musicians: His father is saxophonist Antoine Roney and his uncle is trumpeter Wallace Roney, while his grandparents Marguerite Robinson-Chapman and Roosevelt Sherman were jazz veterans of a previous era.
His mother is dancer, choreographer Nia Love.
