Kills Birds is a high octane indie rock band with a punk streak that exudes raw energy while also retaining a fairly high level of musicality. In that regard they are similar to a number of the strong bands that dominated the grunge era in music. There is a bit of a Dave Grohl (back in the Nirvana days) in the way Bosh Rothman pounds the drums, complemented by Fielder Thomas' thumping bass, not too far from Krist Novoselic (also of Nirvana) or Kim Gordon. Their vocalist Nina Ljeti is positively magnetic as the frontwoman. Her singing style has a percussive quality in the way she stomps on her syllables. Jacob Loeb's guitar is at the driver's seat though, regulating the tension/release cycles in the songs playing against the steady beat of the drums and the bass. He can be drive up to a frenetic pace for sure, but he is also very effective when he is holding back just a little bit.
