K.Flay (stylized with no space) is Kristine Flaherty, a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose style is an amalgamation of pop, indie rock, rap, electronics, and a dash of industrial. Rather than shifting between genres as some artists do, she forged a distinct style assembled with these pieces. She started out as a rapper (mostly out of a self-dare in college, then realizing she was actually good at it), which remains as her musical foundation even as she went on to develop a more elaborate sound, bringing in other musical threads under a facade of pop and rock. She has a sharp ear for melody, an affinity for dramatic arrangements and placing the beat up front, plus a knack for biting lyrics. Her edgier and and darker tones were brightened up and smoothed over on her third album, Solutions, where she seemed to have started inching towards the world of dance.
