Katie Alice Greer is as singer-songwriter, and a visual artist, who came to prominence as the vocalist for the Washington DC area art punk band Priests until they broke up in 2019. Becoming a solo artist seems to have brought out the experimental side of her music. No longer caught in the orbit of the wild beats and the searing (albeit utterly inventive) guitar of fellow Priest G.L. Jaguar, she has started working with various sound effects, tape loops, and industrial noise to lay down some intricate textures as a backdrop for her sonic exploration. Melodic bits still make their way into her music, which give her pieces a nice lift, but the focus of her work, at least as far as her first solo album Barbarism (2022) is concerned appears to be not so much about giving her audience songs to rock out to but moments of introspection and mood.
