Gus Englehorn is a puckish singer-songwriter who combines bits and pieces of the '90s indie rock scene with his unabashed penchant for what might be described as wildly liberating weirdness. The songs have a solid beat (driven by his partner, Estée Preda on drums) and instantly accessible melodies. His overall delivery and especially his vocals do not stick to any obvious script. His songs regularly change their tempo and texture in ways that may be reminiscent of The Pixies to some extent. That said, despite all the manic energy his work exudes and all the imaginative shifts and turns he takes, none of that comes across as remotely gimmicky mostly due to his ability to write great songs, the sharpness of his arrangements, and his infectious sense of fun.
