ГШ (Glintshake)
Outline
ГШ is the band that used to be known as Glintshake in the west back when they were singing in English (ГШ is the acronym "G" and "Sh" in Cyrillic). In 2015, they decided to ditch their shoegaze aspirations, switch to Russian, and be inspired by Russian avant-garde traditions rather than western pop. They emerged as ГШ the following year, still operating within broader rock parameters, but now closer to the post-punk of '80s bands like bIG fLAME and Stump. Their music is not necessarily harsh, but it is highly angular can be rhythmically disorienting at times. Other times they use repetition as a way to build a distinct sonic texture, which means their songs can often extend beyond 6 minutes. Shilonosova is powerful singer who can take turns being melodic, hypnotic, or percussive. However, the core of the band is not her vocals but her interplay with Gorbunov on dual guitars. They are a fascinating, captivating band on stage.
Shilonosova records her solo work in electronic and experimental music as Kate NV.
