Eleanor Friedberger is one half of the siblings Friedberger, who constituted The Fiery Furnaces, which was a fairly active and highly acclaimed indie band of the '00s. Away from her brother Matthew's dense and layered compositions, Eleanor Friedberger's solo career took a different tone. While retaining her ample indie creds, and her one of a kind syllable-cramming, metrically acrobatic singing, she adopted a more straightforward, song-oriented pop. She can still navigate between mainstream rock sounds, folk inspired songs, or just regular pop with her usual dexterity, but the angularity and sudden shifts that were signature moves for her work with the Furnaces is now stripped out for a more streamlined sound, which allows listeners to focus more on her remarkable voice, both as a singer and as a songwriter.
