Dirty Three
Outline
Dirty Three is a one of a kind ensemble comprised of a trio of drums (Jim White), guitar (Mick Turner), and violin (Warren Ellis), who create instrumental music that goes beyond the traditional concepts of rock in many ways. Their work effortlessly shifts between elegiac ballads, emotionally resonant drones, and contemplative pieces with a strong improvisational feel. Ellis is the primary driver with his violin, though he leads more prominently with a piano in 2024's Love Changes Everything. Turner's guitar creates the landscape and adds subtle contours while White's drums navigates the rhythmic space underneath in a sparse and unsettling, jazzy style. It is sophisticated and captivating music that, by design, does not fit comfortably in any pigeonhole. After an initial burst of albums early on, their output became significantly more irregular after the '90s.
