Cigarettes After Sex is an indie band led by guitarist and lead vocalist Greg Gonzales, who founded the band back in El Paso while he was in college, but then settled in Brooklyn in the early '10s. The band plays a particularly atmospheric, ethereal type of dream pop that consistently plays at a mid to lower tempo. The songs are not necessarily catchy or melodic, nor are they instrumentally complex or unusual. They are intended as mood setters. The band is very clear as to what kind of music they are going after: the drums are gentle, the guitars have a quiet reverb, and Gonzales' slightly androgynous vocals provide the soft murmur. The music is unabashedly designed for the bedroom, with a seductive noir undertone that cannot be missed in all this, slowly drifting into dreamland, perhaps following moments of post-coital bliss, as advertised.
