Chet Faker

Chet Faker is the on-again, off-again name used by singer-songwriter Nick Murphy, whose work is centered around synth and electronically driven indie pop. His music comes across as a reimagining of conventional folk and soul sound folded into sonic exploration that recalls artists like Beck, but filtered through a layer of light-handed house music. His songwriting is imaginative and precise, his arrangements underscore bright tones without being bouncy. There were strong trip-hop vibes in his music on his first time around as Chet Faker in the early '10s, when he combined mid-tempo soul/hip-hop hybrid grooves with jazzy chords and outstanding melodies. He developed a more expansive style in the years he worked under his given name, but getting back to his stage name seems to have brought his pop leanings back.
