Chester Watson is a Miami based hip hop artist whose music draws from a wide array of musical influences, including psychedelia, lo-fi, jazz, and electronic music, to create a sophisticated and decidedly uncommercial form of hip-hop. His sound has been consistent going back to the first mixtapes he released in the early '10s. He raps in a mumbly drone without much of an emotional affect, accents, highs or lows. His music is often pensive, slowed down to the mid to slow tempo range, very chill, and swirling around with a level of cool detachment that suggests trip-hop vibes (see his 2019 album Instrumental Tape). His earlier work also made use of jazzy passages and references to early 20th century neoclassical music, all of which complemented his style. His recent work tends to be more percussive in nature, however, that plays well against the meters he uses in his delivery.
