Calexico is a band that evokes a sense of specific location and a well-defined sound that taps into the American southwest, the desert, and is deeply influenced by different strands of Mexican and American folk. Also not too far from the band's sight is the Ennio Moricone style dark western sound, Mariachi music, and old school, '90s style indie rock. At its core, the band is vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino, who have been recording together since 1997's Spoke. They took a detour into Caribbean and New Orleans music on 2012's Algiers. Needless to say, their music tends to be multi-faceted and diverse both tonally and stylistically, but perhaps more importantly, consistently good throughout their catalog. Note that their 2020 album Seasonal Shift is actually a Christmas album ... Calexico style.
