Big Joanie is a basic three-piece band from London whose music comes with no bells and whistles, in a stripped down, bare sound, so it would be easy to think of them as some punk band and move on. That is only part of the story though. The music they put together, has has more variety and texture that goes beyond their punk designation. They cover a diverse range of styles, including artful discordance (the whole Crooked Room EP), post-punk (Way Out), sweet and romantic (How Could You Love Me), middle-eastern tinged surf rock tones à la Dick Dale (Down Down), and so on. This versatility, along with their knack for hooks and melodies, as well as Phillip's rich and expressive voice, backed by Adeyeri's bass lines that tie all these pieces together are some of the things that stand out about this band.
