Best Coast

Best Coast is the Los Angeles duo Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno, whose music is mostly a throwback to the "sun and surf" side of Southern California pop. They started out as a love letter to surf rock and the girl bands of the '60s and over time, evolved into a more mainstream indie rock band with a larger, more sweeping sound while adding a good deal of jangle into their music. They actually did not steer too far away from their core sound, they just found ways to make their essential formula align with more current musical idioms. Cosentino has a sharp ear for the period sound, down to its innocent teenage crush lyrics. The band has a good grasp of their context so they can pull those songs off without sounding like a novelty act.
