Atlas Maior
Outline
Atlas Maior is a band that combines elements of Arabic and Turkish music, Latin beats and Western jazz. The core of the band comprises an oud, saxophone, and drums, complemented by a double bass and an occasional violin. The presence of the oud obviously introduces an instantly recognizable middle eastern atmosphere, but the saxophone is just as effective in evoking the same musical themes (think John Coltrane during his mystical, sufi period). Latin influences are felt around the rhythms, going back and forth between samba and eastern Mediterranean beats. Their music is dynamic with a surprising edge, and they are adept at fusing diverse influences into a coherent and enjoyable sound.
