alt-J
Outline
Alt-j, which incidentally, is merely the pronunciation for their actual name, i.e., Δ (which you get by hitting alt+j on a Mac), is an indie rock band with a highly idiosyncratic sound that packages British folk idioms and medieval elements embedded inside a relaxed, post-punk inspired frame. Their vocal work makes use of counterpoints and layered melodies with some regularity, which is one of the ways the band stands out among their peers. Another way they do is lead vocalist Joe Newman's high pitch voice that is partly nasal, partly creaky, giving his vocals an instantly recognizable timbre. Their melodies are usually catchy and charming, but their folk nature puts them slightly out of sync with traditional indie rock sound, adding to the distinctness of the band's music. Their 2022 album The Dream sees them slide much closer towards conventional indie rock.
