Adam O'Farrill
Outline
Jazz musician Adam O'Farrill is a trumpet player, composer, and bandleader, whose music takes a modernist approach with a bit of post-classical chamber edge in the way he forges an intimate sound. His pieces are melodically rich, though generously sprinkled with dissonance, and they are fairly subtle and textured. There is a strong resonant quality and clarity to his playing, no doubt enhanced both by his overall technical mastery over his instrument and the sense of space he creates with his arrangements that allow breathing room for the members of his ensemble. It may be challenging music for the uninitiated in some ways, but it more than makes up for it with his captivating sound and those hooks that slowly sink in.
Mary Halvorson, James Brandon Lewis, Anna Webber, Matt Ulery, any member of the extended O'Farrill family
His brother, drummer Zack O'Farrill often appears in his line-ups. The brothers are the third generation in line, following their father Arturo O'Farrill and grandfather, Cuban musician Chico O'Farrill.
