36? is an indie band based in Calgary led by singer-guitarist Taylor Cochrane, who is also the main songwriter for the band. He is an idiosyncratic artist in the way he never settles into a specific style or a sound and keeps moving around. He is not a stranger to more mainstream rock or pop forms, but subversion is often a flip of a switch away for the band. Their shifts can be slightly jarring at times, but more often, they are fairly smooth and even charming, given that Cochrane happens to have a real knack for writing catchy tunes. Even when they play closer to the conventional song structures, it is not hard to find some unusual action going on in some corner or the song. Their music may not be experimental in the sense of the avant-garde, but it often presents a fascinating collection of inventive sonic collages.
