Mac DeMarco is a singer-songwriter with an instantly recognizable, distinct style that combines '70s melodic pop and soft rock with '90s indie balladry. His songs are deceptively airy and bouncy, often wonderfully melodic and he delivers them with a slacker-like laid back looseness, while at the same time, dealing with some heavy issues underneath all that casually sardonic facade. His musical style has not changed much since his second album, aptly titled 2 (2014). There is a simplicity and perhaps even some insularity to his arrangements. He plays all his instruments himself, forming a basic guitar/drums/bass and some keys set up without anything fancy or showy. At the center of his music is his considerably catchy tunes, his vocal delivery that sounds like he is huddled up in his own world with his guitar, and that little knowing, playful smirk that is almost audible in his voice.
