Working Men's Club is a dance-oriented, synth pop band that started out as a somewhat dancey, guitar-driven, speak-singing post-punk band whose grooves used to move in a way similar to Gang of Four. Then they took an immediate left turn towards a techno-leaning new wave style after they released their first single. The band is led by the guitarist-singer Sydney Minsky-Sargeant, who delivers his lines with a kind of deadpan speak-sing that is also a throwback to the '80s. The core of their music is the hazy electronic dance feel tightly anchored by a steady drum machine and the interplay between guitars and keyboards. There are hints of New Order, Depeche Mode, and some LCD Soundsystem in their music -- not just in the instrumentation but also in terms of the dark and brooding nature of the songs.
