Van Hunt is a singer-songwriter whose music merges alternative R&B, neo-soul, rock, and funk in a mostly guitar oriented style that is built on rock rhythms and esthetics. His vocal delivery is smooth, especially with his ballads, but the instrumentation and arrangements can be rough and jagged. He started out having established himself as an R&B-oriented artist in Atlanta, not too far removed from the Prince sound. His music started to shift just around the time he moved to Los Angeles, where he made rock/funk fusion more central to his sound, using blues and contemporary R&B mostly as additional components. This transformation was apparent in his 2011 album, What Were You Hoping For?. His work has been sporadic since then, but it has been very consistent. Note that Popular, which came out in 2017 was actually his third album that was not released for about ten years.
