Speedy Ortiz

Speedy Ortiz is an indie rock band led by singer/guitarist Sadie Dupuis, whose distinctive compositional style helped the band create a highly recognizable signature style. They work close to grunge, checking off the edgy and melodic box, but then mix that with off kilter guitar and vocal lines almost designed to induce mini vertigo effects in the listener reminiscent of the way Pavement used to sound like they had just stepped on a slippery surface and could fall down any time. It is an ambitious trick that the band pulls off through sheer will and the quality of their musicianship. This distinctive sound slowly has scaled back over time, along with the grungey aspect of their music, leaving a relatively more conventional rock idioms behind, though they never completely walked away from it.
