SOFI TUKKER
Outline
SOFI TUKKER (often stylized in all caps) is an electronic dance band from New York that that mixes jungle pop and house music with a fair amount of bossa nova inspired beats and tunes. Quite a few of their songs are in Portuguese, sung by singer-guitarist Sophie Hawley-Weld, who studied Brazilian music in college. Tucker Halpern is the DJ who brings the electronic dance angle, which is prominent in their work, but does not fully define what they do. They create lively music with Latin flavor that is also soulful and carries emotional depth. The melodies tend to be fairly strong and memorable, and their recent work suggests interest in regional music that also extends into West Africa and the Middle East.
