Open Mike Eagle

Open Mike Eagle is a hip-hop artist, comedian and podcaster whose music is centered more strongly in his rapping than the beats or the production elements per se. The instrumental parts of his music have grown somewhat secondary over the years, eventually stripped down to a little keyboard action and a basic drum track. Sometimes even that is held back in favor of having his rapping cadence do the rhythmic work. His earlier albums had a more conventionally balanced approach between the instrumental and vocal elements and had more musical details packed in the loops. His rap is literary and witty, and has a strong comedic streak with humor that is primarily observational, satirical, and also highly self-deprecating. He deals with his personal turmoil in exactly that manner in his 2020 album Anime, Trauma, and Divorce, which also happens to be his most musically minimalist work to date.
