New Jazz Underground
Outline
New Jazz Underground is a Floridian trio now based in NYC, whose roots are planted deeply in traditional forms of jazz, particularly in the post-bop style. That said, they also have an ear for the more contemporary forms of music out there, and occasionally incorporate those elements into their work. An especially striking example would be their 2025 release, Dying of Thirst, where they reinterpreted a number of Kendrick Lamar songs into conventional jazz sound, underscoring the music's melodic flow. It helps a great deal that all three members of the trio are highly proficient on their instruments and have an excellent dynamic as an ensemble.
Emmet Cohen, James Brandon Lewis, Kamasi Washington, Melissa Aldana, Immanuel Wilkins
They regularly feature pianist Eric "ELEW" Lewis on their recordings.
