King Buffalo plays groove-oriented heavy rock built around psychedelic-tinged guitar work with shades of very early Pink Floyd. The foundation laid out by the rhythm section, i.e., drummer Scott Donaldson and bassist Dan Reynolds, is fat and thick, and opens up space for guitarist Sean McVay to build 5 to 10 minute epics in expanding cycles of solos. Their music has all the necessary parts in place to take a turn towards metal or full on psychedelic, but stays focused on their particular brand of heavy rock. The songs are muscular, with plenty of reverb and melodic exploration packed in. They deliver them in almost a prog-like mindset in terms of the way they patiently assemble their musical narratives with enough verve that the songs do not feel particularly long.
