Karate

Karate is a post-hardcore trio that was active (as a four-piece originally) in the '90s and '00s with their unique mixture of emo, indie rock, and jazz, often in different proportions at different times. They somewhat flew under the radar during their most productive years before disbanding in 2005. After a period of re-releases, they got back together on 2024's Make It Fit. The work they produced at their height is exciting and unpredictable, with shades of Silkworm creeping around the edges in the way they balance lo-fi and deliberate pacing against '90s style rock sound and subtle songwriting. The band then adds an entire layer of jazz into their music, most prominently through Geoff Farina's excellent guitar work. This is a band whose catalog more than deserves a revisit by fans who may have missed them the first time around.
