Joshua Burnside is a singer-songwriter from Belfast working mostly in the (Irish) folk genre, although his music has been taking a turn towards a broader sound that goes beyond folk or folk-inspired rock. Some of his more recent work seems to be using folk idioms to construct larger mood pieces and expansive soundscapes that brings bands like Beirut and Typhoon to mind. That said, he is a strong songwriter at his core who can frequently put together excellent folk and rock tunes with memorable melodies. His songs tend to have wistful and mournful tones and often project a sense of loss. Some of his work is with solo acoustic guitar, but a lot of the times, he plays with standard rock band with an additional trumpet or violin. Lately he has been experimenting with electronics and pre-recorded tapes as well.
