Isaiah Collier
Outline
Isiah Collier is a Chicago based virtuoso saxophonist who has been working most frequently as a part of his extraordinary quartet, The Chosen Few along with Mike King (piano), Jeremiah Hunt (bass), and Michael Shekwoaga Ode (drums). Together, they bring to life the classic spiritual jazz sound associated with luminaries like John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, and McCoy Tyner, with every member masterfully adds to the overall vibrancy of the ensemble. His solo work, on the other hand, touches on a variety of styles, most of them deeply embedded in Chicago's local jazz scene, well-aligned with the work of Damon Locks, Angel Bat Dawid, and Black Monuments Ensemble, from the same scene: drawing from soul, gospel, and funk, as well as West African (Yoruba) motifs freely floating.
John Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders for starters, Sultan Stevenson, Muriel Grossman, Cassie Kinoshi, various projects of Damon Locks
