Genesis Owusu (born Kofi Owusu-Ansah) is a near-omnivore when it comes to genres. His early work focused on downtempo hip-hop combined with some jazz action that he kept mostly in the background. He gradually incorporated soul and funk into his music, still centered around hip-hop, and then opened the floodgates in 2021 with his debut album Smiling With No Teeth, adding a broader variety of genres to his menu, including indie rock, folk, synth pop, etc. What comes out of all this mixing is not a hodgepodge of styles competing for the spotlight, but a rich and consistent sound that absorbs these additional flavors and makes them a part of its distinctive body, which is bouncy, funky, gentle, music that is mostly genre agnostic. Owusu's vocals also move across these genres effortlessly, singing, crooning, and rapping with dexterity, all of which leads to some truly exciting music.
