El Shirota is a Mexico City based four-piece band whose music is very much in the same lineage as '90s alternative rock and grunge. In this iteration, the grunge feels very organic and lived in. The songs have solid hooks and good dynamics as they crank it up and take it down in the course of a song. The band members are locked in as an ensemble. The guitars are powerful and are distorted in just the right amount. The rhythm section has a nice swing. Ignacio Gómez is a relatively smooth singer and not at all abrasive. He sings in Spanish, though the band does not shy away from instrumentals, which gives the band a chance to show their considerable grooving skills. Their earlier work contained quite a bit of harsh spasms of punk delivered at a frantic pace and some of that still surfaces every now and then.
