Dr. Dog
Outline
Dr. Dog is a Philadelphia band that has been around since 2001, having produced a handful of albums. They started out with lo-fi recordings with very clear references to '60s pop music, specifically the psychedelic/folk tinged White Album era Beatles. They were able to pull this off without coming across like a tribute band, purely through their songwriting skills and the strength of their melodies. Their style underwent changes over the years: it got more refined, they added folk elements, turned down the retro psychedelia, and acquired more conventional pop tones, while preserving the quality of their songwriting. In fact, they are quite possibly comparable to Spoon in their overall consistency, firm grasp of what makes them tick as a band, and determination to stay roughly in the playground they've carved out, more focused on perfecting their art as opposed expanding the scope of their sound.
Spoon, My Morning Jacket, The Band
