Built To Spill is one of the major non-grunge bands to have emerged in the '90s alt-rock wave. They have always been on the more traditional side sound-wise with their propensity to incorporate lengthy guitar jams into their songs. At the center of the band is the singer/songwriter Doug Martsch, whose remarkable guitar work remains somewhat underappreciated to this day. They released some iconic albums in the '90s, with Perfect From Now On ('97) and Keep It Like A Secret ('99) where the band delivered a series of catchy but not overtly melodic songs in which Martsch's soft, slightly nasal, unassuming voice was more than happy to pull back to open up room for guitar passages between himself and the second guitarist Brett Netson expanding on the song's melodic hook. This basic logic of the band's sound remained intact even in their later recordings despite a slow-down in their musical output over the years.
