Abronia is a six piece band from Portland, Oregon whose music lies in the intersection of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and krautrock, with a slight tilt towards post-rock. Their rhythm section is anchored by a giant bass drum. The guitars add a Morricone style dark western twang, while a saxophone and a pedal steel guitar provide additional atmospherics and mood accents. Their music is dark, often drifting into a goth-like drone. It is also expansive and panoramic without getting caught up in ambient. They take their time to build prog-like musical narratives as the instruments play off of one another. Saxophonist Keelin Mayer also handles the vocals, and does so quite skillfully, calibrating her delivery to the mood of the song. Unusual as the bands instrumentation and the overall sound may be, their work is captivating.
