79rs Gang is a one of a kind musical act that brings together the chiefs of two rival Indian tribes (aka gangs) from New Orleans: Romeo Bougere of 9th Ward Hunters and Jermaine Bossier of 7th Ward Creole Hunters, who first collaborated, the story goes, as a way to ease tensions between them. Their work is steeped in the city's Indian tribes tradition, which is a special part of the cultural heritage of NOLA. The music is built around vocals and percussion, and draws from a wide range of musical sources: New Orleans jazz, West African music, blues and gospel, as well as Native American rhythms, all thrown into the same big pot. There is a good deal of call and response in the vocals. The duo captures the sound and the spirit of this crucial Mardi Gras musical tradition in their recordings.
