San Francisco raised, Los Angeles based singer-guitarist and songwriter Natalie R. Lu plays a form of shoegaze that can be both punchy and airy at the same time. The classic wall-of-distortion effect that she creates with her guitar actually tends to have a fairly polished finish and feels like an esthetic choice rather than being transgressive. It is also not that hard to pick up some subtle alt-rock vibes from her overall sound. She sings with the usual feathery, hazy, thin vocals that are par for the course in the world of nu gaze. The songs are melodically anchored, with the tunes being as prominent a factor in her work as is the mood set by the waves of fuzz they ride on.
