Sonny and the Sunsets is a San Francisco based band led by guitarist, singer, songwriter Sonny Smith and a relatively loose line up of friends that join him as his band. They generally have a charmingly DIY sound that freely roams between a ragged form of folk, glimpses of country, '60s free-spirited psychedelia, and a lo-fi indie sound with occasional forays into the world of funk when the mood strikes. Smith is a prolific artist who also releases solo music outside of Sunsets in addition to the work he does as a writer and an illustrator. His songs often have a quirky edge that is coupled with a sardonic sense of humor where he could be found singing about doing sit-ups or making ceramic dogs, etc. There is a level of lightness and playfulness to his music that may be reminiscent of other SF area acts like Foxygen and French Cassettes, except that it stays a bit on the scrappier side.
