Death Valley Girls is an indie rock band that lives on the scruffy edge of garage rock with an eye towards late '70s proto-punk. The focal point of the band is the singer and guitarist Bonnie Bloomgarden, who co-writes with the second guitarist Larry Schemel. They generally seem to be fond of heavy rock style riffs (shades of Black Sabbath). There are some vintage mid to late '70s proto-punk influences in their music, especially by artists like Patti Smith and The Stooges, and by extension, Velvet Underground. They frequently feature a lovely wailing saxophone in their songs, played by various guests, which not only adds a distinct flavor to the songs, but also instantly doubles the cool factor of their music. They are a band also known for their interest in the occult, an interest that finds its way into a lot of their songs.
