dal:um is the Seoul based duo, Ha Suyean and Hwang Hyeyoung, who play gayageum and geomungo, respectively, and produce music that draws heavily from traditional Korean music. They explore their instruments in the context of modern musical sensibilities, though not necessarily western sensibilities. There is very little pop in what they create. Their music does not follow any western song conventions, and instead, proceeds according to its own internal logic, presumably in line with Korean traditions. It is meditative music in many ways and moves along at a highly deliberate pace. It is calm and has an obvious staccato nature due to the instruments. The way the melodies unfold have distant echoes of new age, but only superficially since their music does not loop around the same motifs. It is generally not well-suited for backgrounding and rewards the listener's focus and attention.
