Squid is a post-punk band from Brighton whose work lies on the artsier edges of the current post-punk revival scene. Their music is highly angular, with midstream shifts in direction (though not as jarring as what bands like Gilla Band or black midi do), embracing discordant tones without getting lost in them, grooving Krautrock style. Sonically they are anchored around drummer Ollie Judge's rock solid beats and manic wailing, which gives them the space to freely juxtapose distinct and contrasting styles as if each song is a collage on its own (also see Goat Girl). A song can lead with a funky bass underneath B52s type vocals taking turns with a jazzy trumpet hitting long and mournful tones as if a track from Spirit of Eden got mixed on the edit. This is a highly original band with a distinct sound that also retains a profound sense of fun in the midst of all their artistic bravado.
