Liturgy is a black metal band based in Brooklyn, led by singer-guitarist Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix. Their music has all the extremes of the sub-genre, including the relentless tremolo, all the shrieking vocals, the thundering, battering rhythm section with a blast beat. Interspersed through this frantic attack, they also provide genuine moments of serenity whether introduced with a piano or a string section or bells. They further incorporate modern prog elements and gothic flavorings among other stylistic bits and pieces that would normally fall outside the more purist approach to metal. Hunt-Hendrix has a particular theological and philosophical approach to their music she calls "transcendental black metal" that provides grounding for these elements, but one does not need to know any of that to enjoy the music, which, to be fair, can be quite ambitious, but it also makes for a multidimensional listening experience.
