Ibibio Sound Machine is an eight piece Afrofunk and Afro-fusion band led by singer Eno Williams, a native Londoner whose ancestry reaches back to the Ibibio people in Nigeria. The band combines traditional West African music with western electronic music, funk, disco, and soul to create an uptempo, dance oriented sound. There is quite a bit of versatility in their work as the band members move between styles and inhabit disco, soul, or Afro-funk grooves on any given song. WiIliams is a captivating singer with a powerful presence up front. She sings both in English and Ibibio. The music is not always driven by African rhythms and feel, but they are never too far from the surface even when the band is deep into disco or soul territory and playing them up straight on western terms.
