Cautious Clay is the singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Joshua Karpey, whose music is mostly a combination of light R&B with soft-edged pop, sometimes drifting in and out of jazz tones and light syncopation. His songs are typically well-crafted calm and pensive pieces ranging around the low to mid tempo levels and he delivers them with his clear and relaxed vocals. He has a nice singing voice without much firework, a little R&B falsetto occasionally perhaps, but even that sounds slightly subdued in his hands. If anything sums up his style, it is that his music is mostly unassuming and natural, nothing showy, and his lyrics tend to be introspective with some philosophical undertones.
