Oneohtrix Point Never
Outline
Oneothrix Point Never (or OPN) is a moniker used by electronic music artist Daniel Lopatin who has been putting out work that pulls from minimalism, abstract music, modern music, avant-garde jazz, and drone music. A lot of his inspiration comes from late '80s MIDI driven sound and '90s video game loops with clever melodic snippets dropped in. He has been moving towards a more accessible approach in recent years, adopting common song elements as opposed to his usual open-ended, synth-driven think pieces. There are now overt melodies in his music, rhythmic structures, arrangements, and even vocals, all of which gives off at least some pop-adjacent vibes. That said, he is still an experimental musician at his core, continuing to explore sonic structures through synths, even if his edges may have softened a bit.
Floating Points, Rutger Hauser, Grouper, Julia Holter, Tim Heckler, Brian Eno
He has been working with an interesting array of musicians in his recent work, including James Blake, Caroline Polachek, and The Weeknd.
