Kate Davis is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter who works in the indie rock format, with songs that come from a personal place and oozing with charm and warmth. She started out as a teen prodigy in jazz, recorded a couple of albums where she played the double-bass. Then she switched up on 2019's Trophy where she took a head-first dive into the presumably more exciting world of indie rock. She has a smooth style as a songwriter and does a great job in putting together catchy melodies and making them flow naturally. Her music occasionally comes across as a sweeter (and most certainly way less acidic) version of the early years of Liz Phair, with a similar type of command over her lyrics and melodic material. Her 2021 album Strange Boy is a song by song cover of Daniel Johnston's 1984 album Retired Boxer.
